A 30-year-old man from Chandigarh was killed while his friend, a resident of Panchkula, sustained serious injuries when they were allegedly attacked with a knife at Rajiv Colony in Sector 17 here late on Friday evening over an old animosity.

The victim was identified as Ravi Shankar, a resident of Mauli Jagran, who worked at a meat shop in the colony. Deepu of the colony, who was injured in the attack, is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, Chandigarh. His condition is stated to be critical.

A police spokesperson said the suspect was identified as Sudhir (30) of Rajiv Colony. He was arrested and would be produced in a court tomorrow.

Going by a complaint filed by the victim’s brother Shiv Shankar, the police are suspecting that personal animosity led to Ravi’s murder. The police, however, added that the actual reason behind the attack will only become clear after a thorough investigation into the case.

In his complaint, Shiv stated that the stabbing took place around 10.15 pm on Friday. Some youths had informed the victim’s family that Ravi and Deepu had been stabbed and were lying injured. The injured duo was taken to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 where doctors declared Ravi brought dead and referred Deepu to the GMCH-32.

A case has been registered against Sudhir under Section 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC at the Sector 14 police station.
