A tribute ceremony was held today at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial near Rajindra Lake, Mall Road, to mark Martyrs' Day and honour all those who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom struggle. The event was led by Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia.
An armed contingent of Patiala police paid their respects by reversing their arms, followed by a two-minute silence. Walia laid floral tributes at the memorial.
The ceremony was attended by SDM Patiala Harjot Kaur Mavi, Chief Minister’s Field Officer Satish Chandra, and other dignitaries.
In his address, Walia noted that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, and the day is observed as Martyrs’ Day in his memory. He emphasised that the occasion serves to honour Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, peace and brotherhood.
Walia also remarked that Martyrs’ Day inspires people to uphold Gandhi's principles of tolerance, peace, truth, and moral courage. The youth should learn about the country’s history, the freedom movement, and the sacrifices made by its martyrs.
He concluded by stating that the day is dedicated not only to the freedom fighters of the past but also to the brave soldiers who continue to protect the nation, acknowledging their sacrifices in securing freedom, security and dignity for all.
