Traffic flow was thrown out of gear on both sides of the highway here this morning near Bhankarpur village due to a minor accident.

Commuters heading towards Chandigarh and Ambala were a harried lot as they were stuck for more than an hour in traffic snarls after the accident on the highway.

According to sources, a loaded truck, which was going towards the Ambala side from Chandigarh, hit the median and dragged heavy boulders, blocking the traffic.

Hundreds of commuters, who were coming to the city, were held up on the Ambala-Chandigarh stretch on the Dera Bassi flyover for hours together. There was a massive jam as cars, two-wheelers, buses and other modes of public transport were stuck for over an hour on the Chandigarh-Ambala stretch.

Caught in the traffic snarl, office-goers, students and passengers complained that they were delayed by several hours in reaching their destinations.

Being aware of the village link roads, local residents and daily commuters were seen taking alternative routes passing through

different villagers to

reach their destinations. Motorists were seen breaking the queues thus compounding the problem.

A large number of cars and buses coming from the Ambala side lined up along the highway and traffic on the service road towards Chandigarh was moving bumper to bumper.

Traffic policemen worked in tandom to keep at least one-way lane moving on both sides of the highway, clearing gridlocks that were forming as commuters tried to jump lane.

The sources said finally the truck was moved from the highway with the help of two hydraulic machines and the movement of the traffic was restored, though it continued to move slowly till 10.30 am.
