Mishap victim gives new lease of life to 3 terminally ill patients at PGI
Was declared brainstem on January 9
The PGI has facilitated the first organ donation of 2026, saving three lives. The donor, Harpinder Singh (40), had sustained grievous injuries when his two-wheeler was hit by a vehicle. He was admitted to the PGI on January 6 with head injuries and was immediately placed on ventilator support.
Despite advanced critical care, his neurological condition deteriorated and he was declared brainstem on January 9. The case was registered as a medico-legal case.
In an extraordinary act of compassion amid profound personal loss, consent for organ donation was given by the donor’s wife, setting in motion a process that would go on to save multiple lives.
Both kidneys retrieved from the donor were transplanted at the PGI, offering renewed hope and life to patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. In addition, the lungs were transported to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai, through a coordinated green corridor.
The donor’s wife, Neetu Kumari, shared, “Nothing can ever replace my husband, but knowing that parts of him will live on and give someone else a chance to breathe, to live, gives me strength. If his loss can save even one life, then his journey does not end here.”
Vivek Lal, Director, PGI, stated: “The first deceased organ donation of 2026 stands as a powerful reminder that compassion and humanity can rise even from the deepest loss. The donor’s family has shown extraordinary courage, and their selfless decision will live on through the lives saved.”
