Mohali, March 3

With the allotment of land for Amity University in Mohali, the district is now set to get its third private university here.

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has allotted 40.44 acres to Ritnand Balved Education Foundation (Amity) at IT City here for setting up the university.

The district already has a private university — Chandigarh University at Gharuan village — while the stone of another university, Plaksha University, was recently laid at IT City by the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh.

Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Punjab, said GMADA had invited applications for the allotment of a site at IT City for the establishment of a university. “In response, two educational groups — Ritnand Balved Education Foundation (Amity) and AP Goyal Charitable Trust, Shimla — had applied. The scrutiny committee evaluated both applications as per the policy criteria and recommended Ritnand Balved Education Foundation for allotment. The Chief Minister has approved the recommendation of the committee,” said Bajwa.

He said with the coming up of such reputed universities in the state, especially in Mohali, the area would be developed as a top-class education hub. “To promote higher education in the state, our government is making efforts to bring institutions of academic excellence here. The presence of premier universities in the state is expected to generate considerable amount of revenue, employment and manpower. Besides, economic growth of the region will also be enhanced,” said Bajwa.

According to the GMADA authorities, the land has been allotted to the university at the rate of Rs 2.90 crore per acre.
