Mohali district sees 63.4% voter turnout, peaceful polling

MOHALI: The elections to zila parishads and panchayat samitis remained largely peaceful in the district, which recorded 63.4 per cent voter turnout. No major incident was reported till evening.

The elections to zila parishads and panchayat samitis remained largely peaceful in the district, which recorded 63.4 per cent voter turnout. No major incident was reported till evening.

Around 1,500 policemen, along with 26 police control room (PCR) vehicles and eight highway patrol parties, kept vigil during the elections. As many as 419 polling booths had been set up for the elections in the district. Nearly 2,100 officials had performed election duty.

There are 23 candidates for zila parishad seats and 150 for panchayat samiti seats. The district has 2,74,894 registered voters — 1, 49,676 lakh male and 1, 27, 218 female. The district has 10 zones of zila parishads and 63 of panchayat samitis in Dera Bassi, Kharar and Majri whereas one member of the Kharar panchayat samiti had been elected unopposed.

The counting of votes will take place on September 22.
