Mohali, November 27

Going hi-tech in checking traffic violations and crime as well, the Mohali police are in the process of installing 22 high-resolution CCTV cameras, equipped with sensors, at different intersections in the town.

The cameras are able to sense the traffic flow, thus change the traffic signal as per need, claimed the police.

“With these advanced high-resolution cameras, we will not only manage the traffic more efficiently but also the equipment will prove helpful in checking traffic violations and crime as well,” said HS Atwal, Mohali Superintendent of Police (Traffic).

He said a control room had been set up in Phase 8 where a team would monitor the CCTV recordings 24X7 for the purpose.

He said after detecting violations of traffic rules at signals through cameras, the traffic cops would be alerted by a team in the control room. In the next step, the Mohali police are also contemplating to start e-challaning with the help of these cameras after some time.

Atwal said the intersections witnessing heavy traffic were being equipped with such cameras first.
