The police issued 13,196 e-challans in the past six days after the new online system of issuing tickets for traffic violations became operational in Mohali.

Only 415 traffic slips have been cleared till now, with the police collecting Rs 3.82 lakhs as fine. “Rs 1.28 crore of penalty amount is pending till now,” said SP (Traffic) HS Mann.

As many as 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras are monitoring 17 junctions across the city. These are linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at the Sohana police station.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed reservations over the speed limits. Some of them have sought a change in the speed limit on main roads such as Airport Road. They demanded that the 50 km per hour speed limit be revised up to 60 or 65 km per hour on main roads. They reasoned that there should be uniformity of speed limits in Chandigarh and Mohali as both are situated adjacent to each other.

Residents also demanded visible zebra crossings, functional traffic lights and installation of speed limit boards.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written to the Deputy Commissioner and demanded that the speed limit for cars be fixed at 65 km per hour. “Even on the worst roads in Chandigarh, the speed limit is 60 km per hour. So, the 50 km per hour speed limit on the crucial Airport Road is causing inconvenience to commuters.”

He emphasised that the low speed limit would trouble those travelling to the airport. Additionally, the low speed limit would further increase traffic congestion, which is already a major issue, causing even more difficulties for commuters.

The Deputy Mayor also suggested that instead of imposing a low speed limit, flyovers should be constructed at certain points on the Airport Road. “This will help visitors reach their destination without hassle and on time. However, instead of taking such measures, the administration has installed cameras to enforce a 50 km per hour speed limit, leading to fine for violations.”
