Mohali ranks 7th among 22 districts of Punjab

CHANDIGARH: With an increase in 25.61 per cent result in the endline result of mathematics subject, Mohali district has been ranked seventh among 22 districts of Punjab, while the overall increase has been 24.48 per cent in the state.

With an increase in 25.61 per cent result in the endline result of mathematics subject, Mohali district has been ranked seventh among 22 districts of Punjab, while the overall increase has been 24.48 per cent in the state.

The baseline and endline results of maths were compiled by the Department of School Education, Punjab, for Classes VI to VIII, recently . The test evaluated three competencies – basic operation of maths, fractions and decimals.

Mohali could not make it to top five positions, whereas Gurdaspur, being the third-worst performer in the state in Class X Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) results with 37 schools securing less than 25 pass per cent, has secured top notch in the results.

Mohali has secured eighth position with 54.91 per cent average score in baseline. The endline result of the district witnessed an increase of 25.61 per cent with 79.74 per cent average score, making the district grab the seventh slot in the state for endline result.

Around 23 topics ranging from multiplication of variables, subtraction, decimal, fractions were assessed in the test after the students were given a basic-level understanding in the subject.

Assistant state project director, mathematics, said: “Children have shown remarkable improvement. Fractions and decimals are our weak areas and we will work on it.”

Only 25 per cent students knew how to solve questions related to subtraction of fractions in the baseline and 31 per cent increase was observed after the endline.

Only 22 per cent students could apply basic operations on decimals in the baseline and 66 per cent increase was observed after the endline.

Project to improve students’ level of learning

  • The state government is running a project ‘Padho Punjab Padhao Punjab’ to improve learning levels of students by giving them a basic-level understanding in the subject. 
  • While the baseline test assesses the grey areas in concepts of students, endline test evaluates the improvement of students in the concepts.
  • Currently, Classes I to X are under the ambit of the project.
