Mohali sees in dengue cases

After facing flak for large number of dengue cases reported in September last year the Health Department has been able to control the disease also known as ‘break bone fever’ this year.

According to information, the district has witnessed around 80 per cent decline in dengue cases. Only 52 cases were reported till September, 2019, as compared to 281 cases reported in the corresponding period last year.

In 2018, as many as 1,079 dengue cases were reported from various parts of Mohali district. Till now, 1,023 challans have been issued to residents during a surprise anti-dengue drive by the Mohali health authorities against 524 last year.

Dr Manjit Singh, Civil Surgeon, said, “Health teams have surveyed around 1.30 lakh houses during the drive. In 2018, as many as 99,584 houses were surveyed.”

“The main reason for decline in dengue cases is creating awareness among the public to take preventive measures by teams of the Health Department,” he added.

“The cooperation of people is important to check seasonal outbreak of the disease. Anti-dengue teams are most active in the high risk areas of the district, which include Mohali urban, Kharar, Nayagaon and Zirakpur,” he said.

Maximum dengue larvae were found at Nayagaon village in Mohali district.

“Although we have succeeded in curbing the menace of dengue, we have to take proper precautions at least till second week of November. The transmission season of dengue remains till November,” said Dr Singh while appealing to residents.

Symptoms

Fever for three to seven days, intense headache, pain behind eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Dos

Use screens on doors and windows.

Remove all sources of stagnant water.

Use mosquito nets or repellents while sleeping. 

Remove water from coolers and other containers.

Bring fever down with sponge bath and paracetamol.

Don’ts

Don’t give Aspirin or Brufen in case of fever and do not use antibiotics.

Don’t turn away spray workers whenever they come to spray your house.

Avoid densely populated residential areas.

Don’t allow water to stagnate in bird-feeding pots.

Cover toilet pots when going out of station.
