Soon after the issue of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) Building at Sector-17, functioning without the fire safety certificate raised in the general house meeting on Wednesday, Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer of MC directed the concerned officers to make all firefighting arrangements in the building and submit the report within three days.

The Chief Engineer directed Superintending Engineer and the Executive Engineer, Public Health Division MC, to review the status of the fire-fighting system immediately and ensure that all pending works related to the installation, testing and commissioning of the fire-fighting arrangements are taken up on priority and completed without further delay.

The Chief Engineer also directed them to coordinate with the concerned Station Fire Officer to facilitate inspection and ensure that all required compliances are met so that the ‘Fire NOC’ for the building is obtained at the earliest.

He said detailed status report along with timeline for completion and action taken in this regard may be submitted to the undersigned within three days.

The issue was raised by Councilor Ram Chander Yadav during the discussion with Mayor Saurabh Joshi also stressed the need for periodic checking of all buildings including educational institutions.

Chandigarh Tribune on April 5, 2026 in its report published with the heading “Chandigarh civic body building without fire safety certificate” highlighted the issue for the first time that the building was running without fire safety certificate.

Punjab State and Chandigarh (UT) Human Right Commission also issued notices and calls for report from the Chandigarh MC bafter taking a suo motu cognizance of a news report of The Tribune.
