Municipal Corporation identifies over 200 feeding points for strays in Chandigarh

State-of-the-art Dog Shelter to come up on 2 acres in Sector 25

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has identified around 200 feeding points for stray dogs across the city. The feeding points have been identified in the city in compliance with the Supreme Court of India directions.

These identified locations will facilitate organised, hygienic and conflict-free feeding, ensuring both public health and animal welfare.

The feeding points were identified after proper survey and inviting objections from residents.

Sources said a notification regarding the feeding points would likely to be issued next week. Once the feeding points are notified, residents will not be allowed to feed stray dogs anywhere in sectors or markets.

It will also be ensured that there is no littering at feeding spots. Residents will be challaned if they are caught littering at feeding points. Boards will be installed at every feeding point displaying Do’s and Don’ts. Timing for feeding of stray dogs will also be fixed.

The MC has also identified two acres land at Sector 25 in Chandigarh for development of a state-of-the-art Dog Shelter. The shelter is being planned as per the directions of the Supreme Court (SC).

As per the SC directives all stray dogs will be removed from educational institutions, universities and campuses and kept in the Sector 25 shelter.

After alarming rise in dog bite incidents across the country, the SC in its order dated November 7, 2025, directed all states and union territories to ensure that stray canine were removed from the premises of hospitals, educational institutions, sports complexes, bus terminals and railway stations.

The administration has already issued instructions to institutions and the authorities concerned for the appointment of Nodal Officers to oversee animal welfare and manage stray dog-related issues within their respective premises.

Once the shelter is ready, the MC will initiate a drive to pickup stray/community dogs for the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme procedures.

The feeding points identified by the MC include — near the Punjab and Haryana High Court, near the Chandigarh Club, near Punjab Bhavan and near Sector 3 police station.

One feeding point has been identified near Sukhna Lake parking. Five feeding points have been earmarked in Sector 7, Chandigarh. Four feeding points have been identified in Sector 17, Chandigarh. Three feeding points have been made in Sector 20, Chandigarh.
