Chandigarh, September 25

The city will soon have another skating rink at the Sector 23 government school here. The arena will have a specialised 200m track for speed skating, confirmed Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore.

“We will soon have a new skating rink in Chandigarh. The Sector 10 rink lacks a proper speed track and the same will be provided at Sector 23,” said Badnore.

The Governor had last visited the Sector 10 rink on July 18. The structure does not have a proper speed track, despite the engineering department spending over Rs 6 lakh for improving the complex.

“We have to work on a solution; the problems of the skaters have been considered for further action. The city has good infrastructure as we recently upgraded all the complexes. And in the near future, the same will be extended to various parts of the city,” said Badnore.

Last month, the UT Education Department had postponed the inter-school skating championship after facing criticism for not having a proper track to conduct skating championships.

Meanwhile, the UT Sports Department has confirmed about the approval for building a new skating rink. “The new skating rink will be made at the Sector 23 by the Engineering Department. All specifications have been forwarded to the concerned authorities and now they will look to start the world at the earliest,” said Dr Mahender Singh (Joint Director).
