Panchkula: The body of a newborn girl was found at a park in the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, on Friday morning. The body was sent for a postmortem. A search is on to trace those who dumped it there. CCTV footage is also being examined.

DAV College girl ends her life 

Mohali: A 19-year-old girl student committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house here last night. The deceased has been identified as Sukhmeet Kaur, a resident of Phase II, Mohali. Sukhmeet’s parents said their daughter was a student of DAV College, Sector 10, and was pursuing BSc. They said Sukhmeet was under stress over her studies for a long time and that could be the reason behind her taking the extreme step.   The police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC at the Phase 1 police station. Boy apprehended for sodomy

Ambala: The district police have arrested a 17-year-old boy for committing unnatural sex with his minor cousin, aged 6. Naraingarh women police station SHO Inspector Sheela Wanti said the mother of the victim, a kindergarten student, stated in her complaint that her brother-in-law's son, a Class XII student, lured her minor son by showing her porn videos since August and committed unnatural sex with him. The suspect has been sent to the juvenile home. TNS

One arrested for murder

Ambala: The district police have arrested Shubham, alias Bigni, of Hisar in a case of murder dating back to July. According to the police, the suspect was brought on a production warrant from a jail, where he was lodged in a separate case. In a complaint to the police, Sunhera Lal of Naraingarh had alleged that Shubham and his accomplices, including a woman, had shot dead Puran Chand of Mahuakheri village in Naraingarh on the intervening night of July 1 and 2 after trespassing into his house. The suspect will be produced before a local court on Saturday, officials said. TNS

PO lands in police net

Ambala: The district police have arrested Virender, alias Nikku, of Mullana near here, who was declared proclaimed offender (PO) in a criminal case. According to the police, the suspect was facing a criminal case at the Barara police station and evading arrest, following which he was declared PO by a local court. The arrested fugitive will be produced before a local court on Saturday, officials said. TNS

Three held in cases of theft

Ambala: The district police have arrested three persons in separate cases of theft, the police said on Friday. According to the police, Tinku and Akash, alias Kasho, of Ambala City were arrested on the complaint of a woman of Ambala City, who had accused them of stealing water booster pump, iron pipe and chair from her house on the intervening night of September 25 and 26. In a separate case, Ashwani, alias Bittu, of Kurukshetra was arrested for stealing a motorcycle belonging to Sushil Kumar of Ambala Cantonment on February 20. The arrested suspects will be produced before a local court on Saturday. TNS

Four persons go missing

Ambala: Two young women and a minor boy have reportedly gone missing from their respective homes, the police said here on Friday. According to information, Surjit Singh of Mahesh Nagar near here had reported to the local police that his 21-year-old daughter and her three-year-old son had left home on August 12 but did not return. Nirmal Singh of Shahzadpur reported that his 18-year-old niece had been missing since November 6. In a separate case, Nitin of Mahesh Nagar had reported that his 45-year-old brother Sachin had gone missing from his home on November 6. The police have lodge missing person’s reports. TNS

3 booked for harassing girl

Chandigarh: Three persons have been booked for harassing a girl by calling her and using objectionable language on phone. According to the police, the victim, a resident of Punjab, alleged that Dharampal and two other persons used objectionable language on the phone. The police were informed about the incident following which a case under Sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of woman) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 3 police station and an investigation has been initiated. Pritam appointed mandal president 

Chandigarh: Pritam Sharma has been appointed as the mandal president of Ward No. 2 (District 1) of the Chandigarh BJP. His appointment was announced by Ramesh Kumar Nikku, secretary, Chandigarh BJP. Sharma had earlier served as the vice-president of the same mandal. Pritam Sharma is a member of the BJP for the past more than 30 years. TNS

Educational tour for students

Patiala: Senior Secondary Model School, Punjabi University, Patiala, took its students on a two-day educational tour to Amritsar, Wagah border, Science City, Jange-e-Ajadi and Jallianwala Bagh. About 60 students of Class +1 and +2 were accompanied by their teachers Satvir Singh, Harpreet Singh, Gurpreet Kaur and Avinash Kaur. School Principal SK Nirmal Goyal congratulated the students and teachers for organising the tour in a disciplined manner. TNS

Awareness on drug abuse

Patiala: A special assembly was conducted by Tulip House of Police DAV Public School, Patiala, to spread awareness regarding drug abuse on Friday. Students spoke about the consequences of drugs. They highlighted the reasons why youth get attracted towards it and how one can overcome them. School Principal Meena Thapar addressed the students and motivated them to spread awareness among others also. She said young creative minds should not go waste. Instead, they should be used for the progress of the nation. TNS
