Chandigarh, August 19

Members of the Chandigarh NHM Employees Union (CNEU) today held a protest against non-fulfilment of their long-pending demands.

“We have informed the National Health Mission (NHM) Department, UT, and other higher officials of the Chandigarh Administration six weeks prior to the strike, but the department didn’t pay any heed to our genuine demands,” said Amit Kumar, general secretary, CNEU.

We were compelled by the Health Department to go on a strike, he said. Amit said medical officers, staff nurses, ANMs, LHVs, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, counsellors, helpers and other staff posted at Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, Civil Hospitals at Sectors 22, 45 and Mani Majra took part in the protest.

“We have decided to extend the strike by two more days. On Tuesday, ante-natal check-up is done at dispensaries and vaccination of children takes place on Wednesday,” he said.

He said the authorities have invited them for a discussion tomorrow.  “We will call off our strike only after getting concrete assurance from the authorities,” he said.

He said their main demands include implementation of the order of the Supreme Court on “Equal pay for equal work” which has been adopted by the Haryana Government for NHM employees from January 1, 2018 to frame state regularisation policy for the employees.

He said the union had demanded that the UT Administration should contribute its share in the NHM or demand extra budget from the Centre for NHM employees on the pattern of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
