Chandigarh Administration said it would use all its existing vaccine stock for vaccinating people over 45, a development that comes a day before vaccination opens for people over 18.

"The existing stock of nearly 1 lakh vaccines will be used for above 45 persons for the first or second dose. For over 18, vaccination will start only after adequate extra supplies are received. So in Chandigarh above 18 vaccination will not start on 1st May, as was decided in war room today," UT Adviser Manoj Parida said.

The development comes as vaccination supplies dwindle across the country, forcing states to suspend vaccination of people over 18 to meet their previous commitments of vaccinating those over 45.

Buckling under pressure from states, the central government threw open vaccinations for everyone over 18 from May 1.  Vaccine makers Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech however have already cited existing commitments to deliver to the central government’s own programme to explain their inability to meet the May 1 drive.

Registration for people between 18 and 45 began on April 28.
