Chandigarh, July 28
Commuters using the Google navigation app, Android Auto, will now get information about speed limits, the real-time speed of their vehicles and traffic status while driving across the city.
The Chandigarh Traffic Police have collaborated with Google Maps, India, to provide information about the speed limit to light motor vehicle (LMV) users on all major roads.
At the same time, the Android app users can see the speed of their own vehicles on the screen. —A traffic police official
“Road users travelling on the Google navigation mode will be able to see the maximum notified speed limit for that road on the left at the bottom of the screen. At the same time, the Android app users can see the speed of their own vehicles on the screen,” said a police official.
The police said the move would not only help in curbing accidents caused by speeding on the city roads but also educating outsiders on the speed limits.
Speeding was the root cause of 92 per cent road crashes reported in the city in 2020. Of the 50 fatal accidents, in which 53 persons had died, 47 were due to speeding, revealed a report compiled by the Road Crash Analysis Cell.
The police are also sharing the real-time traffic-related information with Google such as road blockades, diversions effected due to construction works, which will help road users to avoid traffic snarls.
