Now, MC to spruce up Sector 17 Plaza

A day after a large number of vendors were shifted, Sector 17 Plaza is all set to see its good old days.

The MC has started beautification and civic works there. It is also going to write to the Tourism Department to hold events at the Plaza, especially on the weekends.

“We will encourage more organisations to hold cultural programmes with some message for the society. We will also involve market welfare associations to keep the corridors clean and support us in making the Plaza beautiful,” said MC Commissioner KK Yadav.

Yadav, along with Mayor Rajesh Kalia, today reviewed the arrangements at the Plaza. “Today, we started the work of repairing the non-functional decorative lights. I have issued directions for the mechanised sweeping of the Plaza at night. Besides, sewage and other such civic issues are also being resolved,” the Commissioner said.

Soon, there will be many firsts at the Plaza. From the first week of January, 10 golf carts bought by the MC will be stationed at the no vehicle zone to ferry visitors from parking lots to the main Plaza for free. Also, some of the Rose Festival events will be organised at the Plaza.

Neeraj Bajaj, president, Chandigarh Business Council, said, “We will now work on beautification of the Plaza. We will also hold different events here to woo shoppers and visitors.”

1,950 allotted vending sites

Nearly 1,950 street vendors were allotted sites in the city on Saturday. Many vendors in Sector 15 have started their business there. No vendor was allowed in Sector 17 and Sector 1-6 on Saturday too. About 980 vendors were allotted sites on Friday.
