NRI, owner of a music co, gets extortion call

A gangster has reportedly made an extortion call to an NRI, owner of the Rehaan records company that produces Punjabi music videos.

According to the police, Sandeep Rehaan, a resident of Canada, who is at present staying at a hotel in Sector 35, reported that a person made a WhatsApp extortion call on his mobile and demanded Rs 20 lakh.

The call was received on March 16 after which the police were informed.

The police said the caller introduced himself as a gangster, whose name could not be revealed. “Since the matter is sensitive, we cannot give details about the case,” said a police official.

A case under Sections 384 (punishment for extortion) and 387 (putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

This is not the first time that someone associated with the Punjabi music industry has received an extortion call. In April last year, Punjabi singer Parmish Verma was shot at by dreaded gangster Dilpreet Singh and his aides while he was returning home after a performance. The singer was shot at in the leg by assailants trailing his car. The singer’s friend, Laadi, was also injured. Two months later, the Punjab Police and the UT police had, in a joint operation, nabbed Dilpreet near the ISBT, Sector 43, after an encounter.

The singer reportedly paid Rs 20 lakh to the gangster.
