Chandigarh, June 23
Hockey Chandigarh celebrated the Olympic Day at the Sector 42 Sports Complex here today. To mark the occasion, two exhibition matches were played.
In the first match, the women’s team of Government Model High School (Sector 25) logged a 6-0 win against Government Model High School (Sector 42). In the men’s category, Sri Guru Gobind Singh School (Sector 26) defeated Chandigarh Hockey Academy (Sector 42) 2-0.
The local players who brought laurels to the city at the national and international level were also honoured by Hockey Chandigarh. Sanjay, Amandeep Singh, Arshadeep Singh, Sukhman and Maninder Singh, who recently represented the Indian junior team, were honoured with a memento and cash award of Rs 3,100 each. Chandigarh’s senior women’s team, which claimed the silver medal in the national championships, was also awarded. Former India players Rajpal Singh, Deepak Thakur, Prabhjot Singh, Baljeet Singh and Inderjit Singh Chadha, and former international umpire & Golden Whistle Awardee Satinder Sharma were also honoured.
Dr. Chander Shekhar, president of Hockey Chandigarh, Tejdeep Singh Saini (Director Sports), Dr Mahender Singh (Joint Director Sports) and the coaches of the UT Sports Department also attended the event. Om Parkash Soni, Minister for Medical Education & Research, Freedom Fighter & Food Processing, Punjab, awarded the players.
