Chandigarh, July 12
To raise awareness on the harmful effects of single-use plastic bag and promote its environment friendly alternatives, the Municipal Corporation (MC), under the “Safai Apnao Bimaari Bhagao” campaign, organised a special workshop on making paper bags by recycling newspapers and waste papers on World Paper Bag Day at Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 37-B here today.
The workshop was organised in collaboration with Prasanchetas Foundation.
The MC team motivated students to join the initiative to reduce the use of plastic bags and promote sustainable practices in the city. While speaking about the initiative, MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra highlighted the public interest in using paper bags. She said these were eco-friendly, budget-friendly, reusable and decompose naturally without harming the environment.
Mitra said the MC had been implementing various initiatives to reduce plastic waste. She mentioned that challans had been issued and substantial fine imposed on persons found using single-use plastic bags.
