More than 1,700 mothers have voluntarily donated breast milk, enabling the collection of over 1,000 litres at the PGI. More than 1,600 neonates have received donor milk, while over 900 litres have been dispensed to infants admitted to the neonatal unit at the Advanced Paediatric Centre.

The unit will celebrate the fourth anniversary of its Human Milk Bank on February 14. A commemorative event is scheduled to be held at 11.30 am in the NNN Seminar Room to recognise the contribution of donor mothers and the medical team behind the initiative.

Established in 2022, the facility has been providing safe, pasteurised donor human milk to premature and critically ill neonates whose mothers are temporarily unable to breastfeed.

Dr Kanya Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Neonatology and a key force behind the project, described the milestone as a testament to the “unwavering spirit of donor mothers” and the commitment of the neonatal care team. She noted that donor milk has played a vital role in improving survival and health outcomes among premature and critically ill babies.

The anniversary celebration aims not only to honour donors and healthcare workers but also to raise awareness about the importance of human milk donation in safeguarding newborn lives.
