Dengue fever has spread its tentacles in Ambala district. After two suspected dengue deaths last month, over 200 suspected cases have reported from various parts of the district in the recent past.

While at least 125 patients have already tested positive for the disease, 52 cases have been reported from Hussaini village alone, where two deaths were reported. However, the number of such cases could be much more as several patients had reported to private clinics, hospitals and some even went out of the district for treatment.

Taking a serious note of the situation, DC Ashok Kumar Sharma has directed the district health and civic authorities to pull out all the stops to check the spread of the disease in the district.

He asked the district health officials to set up a special fever ward in the civil hospitals and ensure its 24x7 operation. A special laboratory technician for requisite tests of fever patients was also directed to be made available round-the-clock in the civil hospitals.

The DC further instructed to launch a mass public awareness campaign to educate the residents about the symptoms, prevention and cure of the dengue fever.

He asked the civic officials to launch a special cleanliness drive across the district to check the breeding of mosquitoes and flies. Besides directing to conduct fogging of insecticides, Sharma also instructed the civic authorities to make the cleanliness supervisory staff accountable and responsive to the public.

Sub-divisional hospitals ailing

Meanwhile, sub-divisional civil hospitals lack adequate arrangements for treatment of dengue patients following which the ailing villagers have to suffer at the hands of private hospitals or go all the way to district hospital in Ambala.
