Parking woes, dust storm fail to dampen spirits at season’s first match at PCA Stadium in Mullanpur
The crowd support was not limited to the hosts Punjab Kings, but extended to the Gujarat Titans given the presence of local lad Shubman Gill
Fans braved the heat while entering the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA International Stadium as home side Punjab Kings took on Gujarat Titans for their first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The encounter also attracted BCCI president Mithun Manhas alongside IPL chairperson Arun Singh Dhumal at the stadium. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his wife Gurpeet Kaur Mann, newly appointed PCA general secretary and MP Gurmeet Meet Hayer, PCA president Amarjit Singh Mehta, actor Binnu Dhillon were among the other famous faces in the stands.
Despite PCA authorities making specific arrangements, the parking woes continued like last year. Since the stadium and surrounding areas were under heavy security, the fans had to park their vehicles and walk for a while to enter the stadium. “The arrangements could have been better by introducing a shuttle bus service from the parking spots. The parking arrangements by private builders were far, while the PCA’s designated parking served on specific commuters,” said Dinesh, a spectator.
Inside the stadium though, the atmosphere was boisterous. Spectators erupted in celebration for every shot that crossed the boundary rope, every ball bowled, every catch taken and every wicket. The crowd support was not limited to the hosts Punjab Kings, but extended to the Gujarat Titans given the presence of local lad Shubman Gill.
“It was good to see Gill in action at his home ground. He carries immense pride in representing Punjab and as a fan, it was amazing to watch him in action. Though he scored 39, he provided the side with a good start,” said Payal, a spectator from Patiala.
Another supporter of Gujarat Kings added, “I am supporting the Gujarat Titans, as the side is led by the local lad. I will surely come in the next match to support the Punjab Kings, but not today,” laughed Smriti.
A strong dust storm halted the match during the 13th over the first innings for a bit, but the game continued with both the teams maintaining a good composure.
“I thought the rain would delay the match. However, the match continued and we managed to watch good cricket amid the sweet breeze,” said Paramjeet, a young fan.
The PCA also invited children from various NGOs to enjoy the match. “It’s my first time watching a live match from this stadium. It’s an amazing and huge stadium. I enjoyed each and every moment,” said Khushpreet Kaur, another young fan.
