Chandigarh, July 6

The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) is considering conversion of the ground floor of its multi-level parking into a holding area for attendants of patients.

The institute had in July 2020 spent Rs 86 lakh on ramping up the infrastructure required to ensure social distancing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Three shops and two washroom blocks were constructed on the ground floor of the parking area for the patients.

Kumar Gaurav Dhawan, Deputy Director, PGI administration, said, “The parking area was converted into a holding area for patients when OPDs were resumed during the pandemic. The institute has not yet resumed parking in that area as we are now thinking of converting it into a full-fledged waiting hall for attendants. We are exploring many ways to create more space for patients and attendants. However, the final call will be taken after consulting all stakeholders.”

Attendants of patients admitted to the PGI Emergency used to put up on elevated pavements along the path towards the Emergency hall. “The institute is also mulling over installation of green sheds and fans for them,” said Dhawan.

During the morning hours, there is a heavy rush of vehicles heading for the OPDs, leading to traffic congestion.

The PGI is planning to engage more e-rickshaws to ferry patients from one end of the institute to another. The bus shuttle service would be made more robust so that patients coming to the institute by cabs, autos or with relatives could be dropped at the main gate only and the buses could then take them to the OPD block. Besides, the parking area adjacent to the Oral Health Science Centre will be levelled.

More e-rickshaws
