Chandigarh, August 17

To check traffic-related violations, the Chandigarh Traffic Police are planning to introduce penalty points on the pattern of Telangana.

Sources said SSP (Traffic) Shashank Anand had placed a proposal in this regard before the Road Safety Council. The proposal aims at controlling repeat offenders. The proposal is at the drafting stage. It will be sent to the UT Administration for approval after incorporating views of stakeholders.

According to the proposal, penalty points in the range of one to five have been fixed for different offences. A motorist’s driving licence will be cancelled for a year after the accumulation of 12 points. If a person accumulates 12 more points, his or her licence will be suspended for two years.

Those with a learner’s driving licence stand to lose it on accumulating five points. The UT Transport Department will maintain a database of offences and the driving licence will be automatically cancelled once a motorist’s tally reaches 10 points.

The Administration will have to amend the Chandigarh Motor Vehicle Rules for the implementation of the new system. Offences such as driving without a seat belt, speeding, drunken driving, jumping the red light and carrying more passengers than the permitted number will be covered under the new system.

The sources said a decision on the offences to be covered under the plan would be taken after a detailed discussion.
