The Students Organisation of India (SOI), a students’ wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), got a shot in the arm as the Pal Pehalwan Students Organisation (PPSO) offered unconditional support to the party.

Capt Amarinder Singh, president of the PPSO, was present at the press conference organised to announce the support.

As per the PPSO chief, the party contested its first election in 2015 during which its candidate got 1,632 votes, while in 2016 elections, the party got around 1,100 votes.

“Last year, we fought the elections in an alliance with the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU). Our candidate Nidhi Lamba secured around 2,500 votes,” he said.

“We have full faith in the leadership of Iqbal Preet Singh, who is the presidential candidate of the SOI,” said Navjot Kaur, another leader of the PPSO. “Both SOI and PPSO have same agenda,” said PPSO chief.

Who is SOI presidential candidate

Iqbal Preet Singh (24) is a student of the Centre for Human Rights and Duties. He is a graduate from SD College, Sector 32. Hailing from Mohali, Iqbal comes from a business family.

In 2016-17, he was the students’ president at SD College. In March 2017, he was named in a group fight in the college and a case for voluntarily causing hurt, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon and wrongful restraint.

“I have been wrongly named in the case,” said Iqbal Preet Singh.

“But according to the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, a person should be under trial and only then he can be disqualified. He sat on five-day hunger strike and made the PU relax timings for girls hostellers. Our slogan is ‘Iqbal for a Change’,” said Vicky Middukhera, the Students Organisation of India (SOI) Chandigarh unit president.
