Chandigarh, June 25

The Chetna Manch, Chandigarh, organised a discussion on ‘the existing and prospective status of Panjab University ’at the Convention Centre, Sector 36, Chandigarh.

Over 100 intellectuals from all walks of life participated and expressed their views. “The conversion of the legal status of the university from interstate body corporate to Central University is hardly going to serve the purpose. The new education policy 2020 and other governmental initiatives strongly indicate the tendency of over centralisation and promotion of market intervention in the institutions of higher learning. The academia has a bigger issue to deal with and save education from slipping out of the hands of masses,” said Prof Kuldip Puri of University School of Open Learning, Panjab University.

SK Khosla, secretary, Chetna Manch, said, “The Central status will kill the heritage and democratic structure of Panjab University.”
