Members of various organisations protested at Fountain Chowk against life imprisonment awared to murder accused Manjit Singh Dhaner. The protesters demanded that life imprisonment given to the convict should be revoked.
Members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta (BKU) Dakaunda, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), Jamoohri Adhikar Sabha, Istri Jagriti Manch, gas agency workers’ union and other bodies took part in the protest. Leaders said Dhaner was given life imprisonment along with Narain Dutt and Prem Kumar in a case related to murder of an old man, who was further accused in murder of Kiranjit Kaur, a resident of Mehal Kalan in Barnala.
They said the life imprisonment of the three was cancelled by the Punjab Governor, but the decision was changed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. They added the case was still pending in the Supreme Court of India.
The protesters also organised a rally at Baradari on Saturday. Later, local Member Parliament (MP) Dharamvir Gandhi accepeted their memorandum.
