PU departments pay homage to Kargil martyrs on Vijay Diwas

Kargil Vijay Diwas was commemorated by the Department of Defence and National Security Studies (DDNSS) and the Department of Economics along with the horticulture wing of Panjab University.

Lt Gen Gurpal Singh Sangha (retd), Chair Professor, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Chair, DDNSS, was the chief guest at the event. A tree plantation drive was also held on the occasion.

In his address, the chief guest highlighted soldiers’ commitment to the nation. He also underlined the geopolitical significance of Kargil region in maintaining the country’s territorial integrity. He emphasised the role of the armed forces in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

Lt Gen Sangha led the gathering in observing a two-minute silence, remembering the courage and dedication of soldiers, who fought for the nation’s honour and security.

The Department of Anthropology at the university also organised an event to honour the valour and sacrifices of the Indian armed forces during the Kargil War.

Inspector General Ishwar Singh Duhan (retd) was the chief guest and eminent speaker of the function, while YP Verma, Registrar, PU, was the guest of honour.

PU staff members, including DSW Prof Amit Chauhan, DSW (Women) Prof Simrit Kahlon, ADSW Prof Naresh Kumar and Prof Dinesh Kumar from the Department of Laws were present on the occasion.

Earlier, department Chairperson Dr JS Sehrawat welcomed the dignitaries with bouquet and a plant pot to mark the ‘Ek ped maa ke naam’ initiative of the Government of India.

Blood donation camp held

The NSS, PU, organised a blood donation camp on Kargil Vijay Diwas. Dr Parveen Goyal, programme coordinator, NSS, appraised everyone about the importance of celebrating the day. The participants paid tribute to the martyred soldiers. The event was graced with the presence of faculty members, staff and students of the UIET and NSS volunteers.
