CHANDIGARH:Hosts Panjab University claimed the top spot in both the men’s and women’s categories to emerge overall champions at the All-India Inter-University Shooting Tournament held here.

Hosts Panjab University claimed the top spot in both the men’s and women’s categories to emerge overall champions at the All-India Inter-University Shooting Tournament held here. 

In the men’s category, PU was followed by the University of Delhi (DU) and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, in second and third places, respectively. A similar trend was followed in the women’s competition as well.

On the final day, PU shooters Gauri Sheoran (570), Malaika Goel (576) and Yashaswani Deswal (573) scored a combined total of 1719 points to claim the gold medal in the 10m air pistol competition.    

DU (1702) claimed the silver, while Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak (1659), returned home with the bronze. 

In the 10m air pistol individual category, P Shri Nivetha of Bharathiyar University, Tamil Nadu, scored 98 points in the shoot-off to win the gold medal after she was tied with DU’s Aarju and PU’s Malaika Goel for a total of 576 points.    

Aarju (97) eventually bagged the silver, while Malaika (96) had to be content with the bronze medal.   

In the women’s 10m air rifle individual competition, PU’s Vinita Bhardwaj scored 600 points to clinch the gold medal. R Elavenily of Gujarat University (598) bagged the silver after prevailing over PU’s Nina Chandel (598) in the shoot-off.  

Vinita, Nina and Ayushi Podder (594) with a combined total of 1792 points also claimed the team gold. 

GNDU shooters (1779) followed with the silver, while DU (1770) returned with the bronze medal.

Yash shoots to top

In the men’s 10m air pistol championship, MDU’s Yash Kumar won the individual gold with an effort of 582. Rahul Khatri (576) of Jamia Millia Islamia shot the silver, while Punjabi University, Patiala, marksman Surinder Singh clinched the bronze medal.       

Surinder pipped PU’s Anhad Jawanda in the shoot-off after the two were tied at 575 points each.

Jawanda, though, in company of Vishwajit Singh (574) and Rachit Arora (560) claimed the team gold for PU with a combined total of 1732. MDU shooters (1716) won the silver medal, while DU (1716) pocketed the bronze medal.       

Gold for Tejas

KP Tejas (597) of VTU, Belgavi, Karnataka, GNDU’s Manpreet Singh (597) and DU’s Priyank (596) won the top-three spots in the men’s 10m air rifle contest. Arjun Babuta (596) of PU claimed the fourth position. 

In the team event, Babuta along with Arjun Singh Chandel (594) and Chayank (589) won the gold medal with a combined effort of 1779 points.  

DU (1772) claimed the silver, while GNDU (1776) led by Manpreet seized the bronze medal.
