From this academic session, Panjab University will consider the candidate’s Class XII marks in physics, chemistry and biology/maths as the eligibility criteria for admission to 13 BSc (Hons) courses at 12 of its traditional sciences departments under the varsity’s honours school system.

The candidate should also have a minimum of 50 per cent marks in English to be eligible for BSc (Hons) courses under the PU’s honours school system.

While marks attained in PU-CET (UG) (Panjab University common entrance test for undergraduate courses) holds 75 per cent weightage, Class XII score in physics, chemistry and biology/maths carries 25 per cent weightage for admission to courses such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, anthropology, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics and other pure-science courses at the varsity.

In the previous academic session (2018-19), the eligibility criteria for the said courses was the total of maximum marks attained in five subjects, which constituted 25 per cent of the admission criteria, while 75 per cent of the admission score depended on the candidate’s performance in PU-CET (UG).

Also, the candidates who did not have English or studied in Hindi medium are not eligible for the said BSc (Hons) courses. Even though 33 per cent marks in any subject are considered the minimum passing score as per the CBSE norms, candidates, who studied in schools having Hindi or regional languages as the medium of instructions, are likely to feel the heat with the condition of minimum 50 per cent score in English.

“I feel 50 per cent score in English is the minimum requirement for studying sciences because most of the scientific jargons do not have any translation in regional languages. In fact, we dropped English from the aggregate marks attained in physics, chemistry and biology/mathematics, which we had previously included, because the CBSE’s English marking is of poor standards. How can a candidate possibly score 98% in English?” questioned Prof Devinder Mehta, dean, sciences, Panjab University.

Eligibility criteria

For a majority of courses under the PU’s honours school system, a candidate should have 50 per cent marks in English and had studied physics, chemistry and biology/maths in Class XII;

in maths, he/she should have 50 per cent marks in Class XII from a recognised board. For BSc in physics, the eligibility criteria is Class XII non-medical/medical with 50 per cent marks, whereas for BSc in physics (specialisation in electronics), a candidate should have 50 per cent marks in Class XII (non-medical/medical) from a recognised board.
