PU yet to decide on colleges’ reply

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab University (PU) Affiliation Committee convened a meeting today to discuss the replies submitted by the Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 46, and Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA), Sector 50, after the PU objected to admissions in various courses due to discrepancies.

The Punjab University (PU) Affiliation Committee convened a meeting today to discuss the replies submitted by the Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 46, and Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA), Sector 50, after the PU objected to admissions in various courses due to discrepancies.

The decision in this regard will be taken tomorrow by the committee. A member of the committee said: “We are yet to consider whether to extend their temporarily affiliation for the courses or not. The decision in this regard will be conveyed to the colleges. In case, the committee is not convinced by the replies submitted by the colleges, the provisional admissions will stand cancelled.”

The Director of Higher Education (DHE) today endorsed the replies submitted by the colleges and requested the committee to allow the colleges to run courses.

Meanwhile, PGGC-46 had admitted students after getting an undertaking stating ‘admission at your risk’ from them and the GCCBA has allowed provisional admission for all courses. The affiliation committee constituted by the Syndicate in its meeting held on July 2 observed that these colleges failed to remove the deficiencies pointed out by the committee in its report on April 26 (PGGC-46) and March 27 (GCCBA-50).

No sanctioned posts

The Centre has not sanctioned even one post of teachers for the GCCBA. A proposal for more than 50 regular teaching posts has been lying pending since 2010 with the Centre. The affiliation committee had directed the college not to make admission in various courses, including BCom-I, BBA-I, MCom-I and BCA-I. The college was directed to recruit 11 faculty members for BCom, MCom and BBA and seven regular faculty members for the BCA programme. The college, in its reply, stated that it will engage 12 faculty members during the current session out of Rs 1.48 crore available for commerce courses, whereas five faculty members will be engaged out of the BCA fund.

Case of PGGC

The PU committee had directed not to enrol students in BBA (first year), BCA (first year, second unit) and BA (first year) in environment conservation. The college in its reply has submitted that during the last session, UGC-qualified faculty members were engaged for the courses. The college stated the courses were self-financed. — TNS
