The team will also play three home matches at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium, Dharamsala. Punjab Kings will play their opener against Gujarat Titans on March 31, followed by hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad for their second home game on April 11, during the first phase of the tournament. The side will play two away matches — against Chennai Super Kings on April 3 at MA Chidambaram Stadium and against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 6 at Eden Gardens. The first-phase schedule was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “As three states are scheduled to undergo Assembly elections during this period, the full schedule of the tournament will be announced once the poll dates are out. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the first match,” read a statement by the BCCI.
Last year, Punjab Kings — who are yet to win the title — spent over Rs 100 crore to bag 12 capped and 11 uncapped players, including skipper Shreyas Iyer. Previously, the management changed the support staff by appointing Ricky Ponting as the head coach of the side. They managed to get Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh for Rs 18 crore, followed by more players, including, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Glenn Maxwell and Lockie Ferguson, in their squad, alongside uncapped players, including Nehal Wadhera, Vyshak and Vijaykumar. Left-handed opener, Delhi’s Arya remained the find of the tournament as he remained one of the top performers for the side last season.
