Punjab Nav Sirjana Mahotsav begins today

Punjab Kala Parishad (PKP), also known as Punjab Arts Council, will celebrate the “Punjab Nav Sirjana Mahotsav (Rebooting Punjab)” from February 2 to March 29 across the state.

PKP chairman Swarnjit Singh Savi while addressing a press conference today, said, “This festival is dedicated to Mohinder Singh Randhawa, Surjit Patar and Punjabi mother tongue. The events will be organised in Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Bathinda, Barnala, Mansa and Faridkot as well as in Dharamshala of Himachal.”

The main event will be held at the Hansraj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar on February 18 and 19.

On February 18, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will honour five eminent personalities with Punjab Gaurav Puraskar and two others dedicated to the Punjabi language with Maat Bhasha Puraskar.

Punjab Gaurav Puraskar will be conferred upon Jaswant Zafar, Manmohan (Man Ji), Dr Mahendra Kumar, Bhai Baldeep Singh and Dr. Subhash Parihar in the field of literature, cinema, theatre, music and fine arts respectively. Besides this two Maat Bhasha Puraskar will be given to the eminent novelist Jasbir Mand and prose writer, columnist and senior journalist, Varinder Singh Walia.

The names have been selected for the awards based on the recommendations of the jury and selection panel formed by the Punjab Kala Parishad and its four affiliated academies. The recepients will also receive Rs 1 lakh each.

Savi also informed the inaugural ceremony of the grand festival will be held at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, on February 2 where Dr SS Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, will deliver the Dr MS Randhawa Memorial Lecture on the theme “Future of Agriculture and Rural Development in Punjab”.

Besides, a singing programme will be presented by Rajinder Singh of Punjabi University, Patiala, and folk dance performances will be held on this occasion in the evening.

The play “Dehi”, composed by Amarjit Singh Grewal and directed by Rajwinder Samrala, will be staged at Randhawa Auditorium at Punjab Kala Bhawan. Harjit Singh’s documentary film “Main Ek Din Pher Aawanga”, which is based on the poems of Surjit Patar, will also be screened.
