Rain throughout the day dampened couples enthusiasm for Valentine’s Day celebrations. There was hardly any rush in Sector 10, 11 and Panjab University, where it was common on Valentine’s Day. Even florists complained that there was less sale this year.

The Weather Department said it rained 0.3mm in the city on Thursday. However, the day temperature, which was recorded at 23.3°C showed hardly any change from Wednesday. The night temperature was recorded at 13.2°C, which was more than 1.2° C from Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Weather Department has predicted rain on Friday too.

700 challaned for various offences 

The UT traffic police on Thursday issued around 700 challans for various offences to motorists across the city. Nakas including the one to check speeding and drunk driving were laid in various parts of the city. Police officials said around 700 challans were issued for various offences throughout the day. As many as 70 people were challaned for drunk driving, said the police. Last year, only 72 people were challaned for traffic violations on Valentine’s Day in the city. Meanwhile, policemen remained on toes to ensure no untoward incident happened. The entry of motorists was restricted on the Gehri route. Police control room (PCR) vehicles patrolled around education institutes, including Panjab University and city colleges, to keep a close watch. In all, 776 police personnel were on duty in the city today. The police also laid 44 evening nakas between 4 pm to 10 pm. Valentine’s Day was celebrated peacefully in the city, police officials added.
