The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) yellow alert for fairly widespread heavy rain failed to deliver in Chandigarh on Saturday, with the city witnessing only intermittent drizzle. The IMD has forecast scattered rain with thunderstorms on Sunday.

Chandigarh recorded 1.6 mm rainfall during the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Saturday, while the IAF airport observatory recorded 33.6 mm during the same period. However, during the IMD’s daytime observation window from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, the city recorded no rainfall.

The latest rainfall was not enough to erase Chandigarh’s monsoon deficit. The city’s seasonal rainfall since June 1 stood at 414.1 mm till 8.30 am, remaining 18.2% below normal. The IMD bulletin recorded no rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, leaving the seasonal total unchanged during the daytime observation period.

The IMD has forecast scattered rainfall with thunderstorms on Sunday, with no weather warning from Monday onwards through the next five days. The five-day forecast indicates maximum temperatures of 33°C on Sunday, 31°C on Monday, 30°C on Tuesday, 33°C on Wednesday and 35°C on Thursday. The minimum temperature is expected to remain between 26°C and 27°C.
