Record 13 Independents set to test political waters in city

CHANDIGARH: From a housewife to septuagenarians, Independent candidates for the Chandigarh seat have made the Lok Sabha election interesting.

From a housewife to septuagenarians, Independent candidates for the Chandigarh seat have made the Lok Sabha election interesting. This time, the city is seeing a record 13 Independent candidates.

While majority of these candidates are residents of Chandigarh, there are others from Panchkula, Ambala and Karnal in Haryana who have jumped into the poll fray in the city.

Sunita (25), a resident of Sector 46-D, is a housewife and one of the contenders for the seat. She said she decided to contest the election as she did not find other candidates worthy of being elected from Chandigarh.

Nidhi Kansal, another woman Independent candidate, belongs to Ambala. In an affidavit filed before the Returning Officer, she has mentioned her address as Parshuram Nagar, Ambala City. She has done MTech in software engineering and now wants to pursue a career in politics. She said her Guru ji has advised her to enter politics. She said since the Ambala seat was reserved, she decided to start her political career in Chandigarh.

Rajkamal Singh, a resident of Sarangpur village, has studied till Class VIII at a government school in Meerut. He said he was fighting the election to serve people.

Karan Vasudeva (34), who has done BA from DAV College here, is also trying his luck in the election as an Independent candidate.

A 75-year-old woman from Panchkula, Prem Lata Jindal, is also in the fray. She had studied till Class VI at Government High School, Lehra Gagga. She passed out in 1956.

Manjit Singh Bohat, an Independent candidate, has come all way from Karnal to contest the Chandigarh seat. He did MTech in mechanical engineering from the MDU, Rohtak.

Independent candidates Udya Raj and Akhilesh Kumar belong to Bapu Dham Colony while Ram Kumar is from Dadu Majra. Tejinder Singh Walia (77), a resident of Sector 44-C, is also in the fray.

School bag, biscuit among poll symbols

  • Helicopter, keys, torch, telephone, gramophone, pressure cooker and apple are some of the symbols the Election Department has allotted to candidates in Chandigarh. 
  • Sources said the candidates preferred the symbols as per their choice. 
  • Two candidates had applied for helicopter as poll symbol and it was allotted by holding a draw.
  • Some other interesting symbols the voters are going to witness in the EVM include blackboard, school bag and biscuit.
