Chandigarh, November 7

Homemakers heaved a sigh of relief today after a 28 per cent fall in the onion prices. The onion rates were Rs 70 till yesterday due to shortage of supply from Nashik, Maharashtra, which has now come down to Rs 50. As per the sources, the prices of onion are more expected to reduce in the coming days.

There was a shortage in supply of onion from Nashik from the past 15-20 days, owing to which the onion price shot up. Another reason for the surge was spoiled onion crop due to excessive rainfall in the area,

Gobind Singh from Kisan Mandi said, “Onion are also been supplied from Alwar district of Rajasthan. However, these onions are more red and bitter in taste, and thus they are sold at a rate of Rs 50 (retail) and Rs 45 in wholesale.” The onions from Nashik district are comparatively priced at Rs 60 in retail and Rs 50 in wholesale.

Meanwhile, the fall in prices brings respite to homemakers. Anita, a resident of Sector 30 said, “A decline of Rs 20 is a huge relief. We were really put off to see no end to the high price of daily ingredient in the food. We expect no more rise in price in future.”
