Chandigarh, June 12

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), PGIMER, has condemned the recent attack on a doctor at the NRS Medical College, Kolkata.

In a statement here today, the association president, Dr Uttam Kumar Thakur, stated that Dr Paribaha Mukherjee, an intern on duty, was brutally attacked by a group of hooligans on the medical college campus a few days back.

He said a group of vandals rushed to the campus after the death of their 75-year-old relative and attacked Dr Mukherjee. She was battered, assaulted and maltreated by them. She suffered depressed skull fracture followed by convulsion and admitted to the ICU. The West Bengal Government and its forces remained mute spectators as usual regarding such incidents, he alleged.

“Incidents of violence against doctors on duty are increasing day after day. We profoundly condemned the incident and are expecting speedy recovery of our junior colleague,” he said.

“We are with all doctors, who have ceased their duty and also demand the arrest of the accused. A serious and strong action has to be taken by the state government immediately otherwise it will lead to unrestrained dissent soon,” he added

As a mark of protest, resident doctors would wear black badges during working hours tomorrow, Dr Thakur said.
