A resurgent Congress swept the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency under the leadership of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
In a major morale booster for the Congress, the party dominated the Chamkaur Sahib segment by leading in 13 out of 15 block samiti zones and winning all three zila parishad zones falling under the Assembly constituency. The clean sweep in the zila parishad and near-total control of the panchayat samiti zones underlined the continued influence of Channi in his home turf and signalled a strong revival of the Congress organisation at the grassroots level.
District Congress president Ashwani Sharma described the outcome as a decisive rejection of the ruling party, claiming it reflected public dissatisfaction with the AAP government. “This is a clear endorsement of Congress leadership and policies at the village level,” he said, asserting that the results would energise the cadre across the district.
The Ropar Assembly constituency remained with the AAP. The ruling party retained all three zila parishad zones in the constituency and emerged victorious in eight out of 15 block samiti zones, thereby maintaining its dominance in the district headquarters region. The Congress performance in Ropar Assembly constituency was weakened by its organisational lapses, as the party failed to field candidates in two out of the three zila parishad zones, a factor that directly benefited AAP.
AAP leaders said the Ropar results validated the government’s development agenda and administrative record. “Despite anti-incumbency claims by the opposition, people have voted for continuity and governance,” an AAP functionary said.
The contest in the Anandpur Sahib Assembly constituency turned out to be more evenly balanced. Here, the AAP won the Bhabor Sahib zila parishad zone and was leading in another Zila Parishad zone, while the Congress managed to secure a significant victory in the Bharatgarh zila parishad zone. The mixed verdict in Anandpur Sahib reflected a close contest, with both parties showing strength in different pockets of the constituency.
Overall, while AAP succeeded in winning a majority of seats in Ropar and Anandpur Sahib assembly constituencies the Congress emerged upbeat, citing its sweeping performance in Chamkaur Sahib and competitive showing elsewhere.
Political observers noted that the results point towards a fragmented and closely contested rural mandate, rather than a one-sided wave.
