The Congress has won an absolute majority in five of the seven municipal councils in the district. The counting of votes was held today.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won an absolute majority in the Nayagaon MC, while in Kharar, it was a hung House with no party getting an absolute majority. Eight Independent candidates won the elections and will play a key role in deciding as to which party bags power in the Kharar MC.

The elections to the Kurali, Kharar, Nayagaon, Banur, Zirakpur, Dera Bassi and Lalru municipal councils were held on February 14. The elections were held in 145 wards of the seven councils. The Congress won in 85 wards, the SAD in 34, the BJP in five and AAP in one. Independent candidates won in 20 wards.

District Electoral Officer Girish Dayalan said in the Kurali MC, the Congress won in nine wards, the SAD in two, Independent candidates in five and the BJP in one. In 13 wards of the Banur MC, the Congress won in 12 seats and the SAD in one. In 21 wards of the Nayagaon MC, the SAD won in 10, the Congress in six, the BJP in three, while Independents won in two.

Of the 17 wards in the Lalru MC, the Congress won in 12, the SAD in two, while Independent candidates won in three.
