Chandigarh, September 21

The strike by door-to-door waste collectors is likely to be intensified in the coming days as sanitation workers extended their support to the waste collectors today. Meanwhile, the Finance and Contract Committee of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has approved the appointment of 155 registered door-to-door collectors, who got themselves registered at the MC office up to September 21.

Krishan Kumar Chadha, president of the Safai Karamchari Union, said the sanitation workers would support the strike from Sunday in case their demands were not met.

Meanwhile, Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Union Minister, and Pradeep Chhabra, president, Chandigarh Congress, also addressed the workers at the dumping ground and extended their support. Harmohan Dhawan, former Union Minister, also led the delegation to meet UT Advisor to the UT Administrator and demanded to solve their problems.

The F&CC meeting was held under the leadership of Davesh Mayor Moudgil. It was attended by Commissioner KK Yadav and members of the committee. The members were of the view that all the 1,447 waste collectors would be appointed as waste collectors immediately after they got registered at the MC office.

The Mayor called the F&C meeting to monitor door-to-door collection of waste and the Swachh Bharat Mission on a weekly basis.

The committee accorded approval to hire 152 tractor-trailers (as per technical requirement) for door-to-door collection on an emergency basis from commercial establishments and households in Chandigarh. The committee has also fixed the timings of tractor-trailers to lift waste/garbage from households throughout the city from 7 am to 3 pm. The committee decided to lift horticulture waste from sectors and other parts of the city on every Sundays.

To promote onsite composting, the F&CC accorded approval to make it mandatory to install composting pots for all MC councillors and officers up to Group-C level and Group D employees will be inspired to adopt onsite composting at their household level.
