Sarathi volunteers cross 1L service hours at PGI
Launched on May 6, 2024, the project has seen participation from nearly 1,700 student volunteers
The Sarathi volunteer programme at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has completed more than 1,00,000 hours of voluntary service, marking a significant milestone in organised youth-led engagement within a public healthcare institution.
Launched on May 6, 2024, the project has seen participation from nearly 1,700 student volunteers, each contributing an average of around 60 hours. Their work spans patient guidance, assistance to elderly persons and those with disabilities, support to attendants and facilitation across outpatient departments, inpatient wards, emergency services and diagnostic areas.
PGIMER Director Prof Vivek Lal said the achievement highlighted the value of sustained and accountable voluntary service. He noted that the programme reflected a structured approach in which service was rooted in discipline, empathy and responsibility, rather than sporadic participation. He said the cumulative impact of these hours helped strengthen the culture of care within the institution.
Deputy Director (Administration) Pankaj Rai said the programme functioned within defined frameworks, with clearly assigned roles, standard operating procedures and supervision to ensure that volunteer support complemented clinical services without disrupting hospital functioning. He added that the sustained engagement of volunteers over several months demonstrated commitment and reliability.
Before deployment, Sarathi volunteers undergo structured orientation covering communication skills, patient dignity, confidentiality and stress management. This training, PGIMER officials said, ensured professionalism and sensitivity while working in a hospital environment.
Beyond operational support, the programme has also emerged as a learning platform for students, exposing them to public health challenges and social realities associated with healthcare delivery.
