MOHALI: Savita Kumari, a student of Chandigarh University, Gharuan, won the silver medal in the Asian Powerlifting Championship in Rajasthan. She won the 47kg category title by lifting a total weight of 317.5 kg (130 kg in squat, 52.5kg in bench press and 135 kg dead lift). 

Nimish selected for Asian Softball Championship 

Chandigarh: Nimisha Singh Sihag, a student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, has been selected to represent the Indian women’s softball team in the upcoming Asian Junior Women Championship to be held at Clarke, Philippines, from May 12 to 18. Nimisha is a national-level player from the city and has played five national championships.

PDCA announce U-16 probables squad 

Panchkula: Panchkula District Cricket Association has selected a 25-member U-16 probables squad on Sunday. The squad will attend a preparatory camp before the final selection of the team for the upcoming inter- district cricket championship. The selected players should report at the CL DAV School, Sector 11, on May 14 (5pm) with Date of Birth (DOB) certificate, one passport size photograph and a copy of their Aadhaar card. St Xavier’s beat Chandigarh Baptist boys in cricket  

Chandigarh: St. Xavier’s International School, Zirakpur, defeated Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45, by seven wickets in the St Xavier’s inter-school cricket championship on Sunday. Batting first, the Baptist school boys were bundled out for 60 runs in 11.4 overs. Ravi (15) and Gurkirat (13) were the main scorers. For the bowling side, Lakshya Bishnoi claimed four while Akshat Sharma took three wickets. In reply, St. Xavier’s School scored 63/3 in 9.4 overs. Akshat Sharma scored 25 runs. Ravi claimed two wickets for the winning team.

Roots Academy Open Tennis meet from May 19 

Mohali: Roots Tennis Academy, Zirakpur, will organise Open Tennis Championship from May 19 to 20. The championship will be held in the U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-14 year's age groups. Interested players can confirm their entries with the organisers at the tournament venue before May 18.

Sodhi meets Rathore in Delhi 

Mohali: Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi met Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs and Sports Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in New Delhi. Sodhi said that he demanded maximum assistance from the centre to improve the status of sports in the state. He also pushed for allotting projects to the state under ‘khelo India’ plan. Earlier, this month, the Punjab government had announced to reform their sports policy to boost sports. TNS 

Two snatchers arrested

Mohali: The police claimed to have arrested two snatchers, who were active in the area for the past few days. The accused have been identified as Gurcharan Singh Monu and Babu, both residents of Sector 56, Chandigarh. According to the police, the duo had recently snatched Rs 600 and a mobile phone of Tavleen Singh, a resident of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, after attacking him. The victim was going to Phase 6 around 3 am when the incident took place. After getting complaint from the victim, the police arrested the duo and recovered the cash and mobile phone of Tavleen. A case has been registered in this regard at the Phase 1 police station here. TNS

‘Raahgiri’ event organised

Panchkula: The police in association with the district administration on Sunday organised a ‘Raahgiri’ event in front of the Yavnika Park gate in Sector 5 here with the objective to providing a stress-free atmosphere to the people. Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta was the chief guest. The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajinder Kumar Meena and Deputy Commissioner Mukul Kumar. The programme was attended by officers and officials of the District Administration, local citizens and students of various schools. Performances on Haryanavi, Hindi and Punjabi songs enthralled the audience and participants. Speaking on this occasion, MLA Gian Chand Gupta complimented the DCP and the Deputy Commissioner for their fruitful efforts in organising the first-ever “Rahgiri” event in the town. The programme began at 6 am and continued till 8 am. TNS

Gangster held, pistol recovered

Kharar: The Kharar CIA Staff has arrested a gangster, Gursewak Singh, alias Bunty, near Jakarmajra village on Sunday. A .315-bore pistol and three live cartridges have been recovered from his possession. A police party stopped the accused coming on a motorcycle bearing registration number CH 01-AZ-7178 near the village. During the search, the pistol and the cartridges were recovered from him. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him at the Kharar Sadar police station. It was revealed during interrogation that in 2017, the gangster along with another gangster shot dead one Mandeep Singh at Taran Tarn. A case was registered against them at that time. The accused, who was absconding since then, was arrested by the CIA Staff. OC
