School buses collide head-on in Kharar
Both drivers, few children suffer injuries in accident
Two drivers and a few children sustained minor injuries when two school buses collided head-on near Jamuna Apartments on the Kharar national highway in fog around 8 am today.
Three children and the bus drivers were taken to a hospital. The two buses were plying for St. Ezra International School, Khanpur, Kharar; and Delhi Public School, Mohali. Eyewitnesses said one of the bus was coming from Kurali side on the service lane while the other was going to Kurali side when they collided head-on.
While the transport staff of DPS Mohali school alleged that the other bus was being driven on the wrong side, the driver for the vehicle ferrying children of St Ezra International School, Khanpur, alleged that the other bus driver was talking on the phone while driving.
“On a complaint of the DPS management, the police have booked Tarunjit Singh for driving on wrong side. It is a matter of investigation whether the other driver was using phone while driving,” said Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu.
Both the schools management were unavailable for a comment.
Driver Tarunjit sustained injuries on the forehead and hands and was admitted to the Kharar subdivisional hospital, while the other driver, Satnam Singh, suffered a fracture in the leg.
“Administration and traffic police should be strict with school bus staff as it concerns the safety of school children,” said irate residents who gathered at the spot.
The incident has left the Mohali administration and traffic police under spotlight for the lax implementation of Safe School Vahan Policy.
