Self-defence training imparted to 13 girls

CHANDIGARH: A three-week long self-defence training programme, ‘Swayam’, for visually-impaired girls culminated today with a demonstration by 13 girls of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26.

A three-week long self-defence training programme, ‘Swayam’, for visually-impaired girls culminated today with a demonstration by 13 girls of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26.

The training was conducted by the Chandigarh Police and was organised by the RCS Positive Abilities Rotaract Club and the institute.

Students trained were Vrinda, Savita, Rekha, Kashish, Usha, Manjit, Gaganjot, Kusum, Harleen, Garima, Rekha and Mansi. The training was conducted by Head Constable Sanjay and Lady Constables Pooja and Sonia.

Students showed exemplary coordination of hands, feet and eyes and gave demonstrations on how to defend and protect oneself if attacked in an ATM, a kidnapping attempt, bag snatching and being attacked with a knife. The girls also showed the strength and coordination they had achieved by breaking tiles with the palm of their hand.

Amrinder Singh, president, RCS Positive Abilities Rotaract Club, who is himself visually challenged, said: “By completing the self-defence course, women have enhanced strength and confidence. The ability to physically defend themselves has made them feel more empowered in their life.”

UT SSP Nilambari Jagadale was the chief guest on the occasion and Mahavir Singh, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, was the guest of honour. — TNS
