The Department of Sociology, Panjab University, organised a national seminar on ‘Emerging Dalit Issues: Strategies for Empowerment and Development’.
Prof Davinder Singh, coordinator, Ambedkar Centre, focused on the legal dimensions to alleviate caste inequality, while Prof Kumool Abbi, chairperson of the Department of Sociology, introduced the theme of the seminar.
Beginning with the inaugural panel discussion initiated by Prof Ronki Ram, presentations by Prof Birender Pal Singh, Prof Ravinder Sandhu and Prof Harvinder Bhatti unravelled urban, rural and agrarian dimensions of caste-based inequalities.
This was followed by three technical sessions on representation of Dalits in popular culture and religion that explored the issue of marginality in relation to gender, landless labourers and migrant labourers.
VP to attend PU convocation
Chandigarh: M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India and Chancellor of Panjab University, will address the 68th convocation of the university on April 28. Many other important dignitaries are also likely to attend the event. — TNS
