Chandigarh, July 19
The Municipal Corporation drive against those using single-use plastic is on but there is no let-up in violations.
Anti-polythene raids were conducted in different sectors yesterday and a number of challans were issued. A joint task force of the MC and the Chandigarh Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued over 800 challans in the past six months.
The Centre from July 1 had ordered a nationwide ban on single-use plastic items, but violations were rampant, both by customers as well as shopkeepers.
Items such as ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packaging film around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets; plastic or PVC banners of less than 100 micron, stirrers are banned.
