In a case of spat between two Punjabi singers -- Rami Randhawa and Elly Mangat -- on social media, the Mohali police on Wednesday arrested the latter before he could reach Randhawa’s residence in Purab Apartments in Sector 88 here in the evening.

As per his ‘challenge’ of seeing Randhawa at his (Randhawa) residence, Mangat reached Sector 88 around 6.30 pm where the police, who were waiting for him, nabbed the singer immediately.

Mangat was accompanied by his five friends, including a woman. He was taken to the Sohana police station.

According to the police, Mangat, who was coming from abroad, landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport this afternoon and reached Mohali in a SUV of his friend.

It is to be noted that both singers were using abusive language against each other on social media and had also thrown a challenge to settle scores with each other today.

The police, which registered a case for obscene acts and criminal intimidation against the duo, along with Rami Randhawa’s brother Prince Randhawa, at the Sohana police station here arrested Rami yesterday. Later, he was released on bail.

According to Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal, the police were also in the process of re-arresting Randhawa. “After being released on bail, Randhawa again indulged in objectionable acts on social media today. We are going to re-arrest him,” said SSP Chahal.

After bringing Mangat to the police station, the police also summoned Rami there. SSP Chahal also reached there. “Cross-examination of both suspects is being done,” said SSP Chahal.

Police resort to mild lathicharge to disperse crowd

High drama was witnessed in Sector 88 and in front of the Sohana police station where a number of fans and supporters of both singers gathered on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, a large number of Mangat’s fans and supporters, carrying sticks and other weapons, were seen waiting for the singer near Purab Apartments this evening. When the police nabbed Mangat from the sector, all youngsters assembled in front of the police station. The police have to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd. According to sources, the police also damaged three-four cars of the supporters during their action.

Duo continues to throw challenges

Despite the registration of a case, both singers continued to throw challenges at each other on Wednesday.

According to sources, some of the supporters/fans were carrying firearms. Some of them also fired gunshots in the air in Sector 88. The police said they were conducting investigations in this regard.
